Disclosure first: we make What's For Dinner?! (WFD). This is a week of dinners a couple could end up with when one of you is vegan and the other isn't, and every meal on it is in the app.
Couples in this spot tend to land in one of two places. Two dinners every night, or one of you quietly eating whatever's vegan while the other quietly misses cheese. Neither lasts long.
There's a third option, and it's less of a sacrifice than it sounds. Dinner's vegan, and the meat-eater gets an equal say in which vegan dinners. Put vegan in the household's Dietary Needs in WFD and every meal the app offers fits it, in the swipe deck, Explore, search, Tonight and swaps. If the vegan one joins your household with vegan already set, it's added to the household's list the moment they join.
Then you both swipe. When you both love the same meal it's a match, and matches build the week. The meat-eater's skip still counts. Nobody sees what anyone else skipped, so nobody has to explain their feelings about tempeh.
Korma on Monday is a soft start. Tuesday's pad thai is the tofu dish for people who think they don't like tofu. Friday's smash burgers come with miso, and we'd bet that's the night the meat-eater stops noticing. Sunday's lasagne comes in a bowl, because nobody wants to layer anything on a Sunday.
The point is that the meat-eater picked these too. Nobody's dinner is the other one's compromise.
When the week's set, the plan builds one shopping list and the Personal Shopper puts it into your Tesco trolley on iPhone. The shop section below has the details. For two people who can't agree on anything at the fridge door, there's the app for couples who can't agree on dinner.
What's For Dinner?! (WFD) is a swipe-to-match dinner-decision and meal-planning app for couples, families and households: everyone swipes on meals, you match on one you both want, matches build your weekly plan, and the plan builds your shopping list. Available on iPhone and Android.
Each person swipes on meals on their own phone, whenever suits them. Love it or skip it. Nobody sees what anyone else skipped.
When two people love the same meal, it's a match. The plan builds from whoever has swiped, so nobody's dinner waits on anyone else.
Matched meals build a seven-night plan. Swap a meal, move it to another night, lock the ones you're sure of or skip a night you won't be cooking.
One shopping list for the whole week, and on iPhone the Personal Shopper puts it in your supermarket trolley.
The whole run, timed, is in the weekly food shop in under four minutes.
Make dinner vegan and give the other person an equal say in which vegan dinners. In What's For Dinner?! (WFD) you put vegan in the household's Dietary Needs, so every meal the app offers fits it, then you both swipe on your own phones. When you both love the same meal it's a match, and matches build the week.
Yes, the same say as anyone. In What's For Dinner?! (WFD) every member swipes on their own phone, love it or skip it, and nobody sees what anyone else skipped. A dinner the meat-eater skipped won't be a match.
Yes. Put vegan in the household's Dietary Needs in What's For Dinner?! (WFD) and the swipe deck, Explore, search, Tonight and swaps only offer meals that fit. Set it on one phone and everyone's plan follows. Dietary Needs is free.
Not this exact week. What's For Dinner?! (WFD) builds your plan from your own swipes, so your week will be made of the vegan dinners you two liked. Every dinner on this page is a meal in WFD.
The plan in What's For Dinner?! (WFD) builds one shopping list, sorted by aisle with quantities merged into pack sizes. On iPhone, the Personal Shopper opens Tesco's own website inside the app, adds each line to your trolley and reads the trolley back to check it went in. You sign in to Tesco yourself, review the trolley, pick a slot and pay there.
What's For Dinner?! (WFD) is free to use, with no time limit: swiping, matching, the weekly plan and cook mode. Full Access adds the shopping list and the tools to change the week, £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year for up to six people, with a 3-day free trial. One subscription covers both of you.
