Two working parents and a three-year-old

30-minute dinners for working parents, shopped at Ocado

Seven dinners that each take 30 minutes or less, for two parents who both work and share the nursery run. You decide the week in What's For Dinner?! (WFD) by swiping on your own phones, the matches build the plan, and the shopping goes into an Ocado trolley from one iPhone.

Pictures, cooking times and servings are from each meal's card in the app.

Disclosure first: we make What's For Dinner?! (WFD). This is a week of dinners two working parents could end up with. Every meal on it takes 30 minutes or less, and every one is in the app.

You know how it goes. One of you sends "what are we doing for dinner?" from the train at ten past five. The other replies at twenty to six, from the nursery corridor, with "don't mind, you?" By the time you're through the door with a three-year-old and a bag of wet clothes, the decision's been made, and Deliveroo made it.

The fix isn't more willpower at twenty to six. It's deciding once, on Sunday, without a meeting.

In WFD you each swipe on meals on your own phone whenever you get a minute: on the train, in the pickup queue, in bed. Love it or skip it. When you both love the same meal it's a match, and matches build the week. If one of you never gets round to it, the plan still builds from whoever swiped. One of you liking three meals is enough to start.

Thirty minutes, every night

Every dinner here takes 30 minutes or less by the recipe's own timings, so there isn't a hard night in the week. Monday's chicken parmigiana, Wednesday's salmon, Friday's fajitas. Nothing on this list needs you to have started at four o'clock.

The shop mostly takes care of itself. The plan builds one list, merged into the pack sizes the shop sells, and on iPhone the Personal Shopper puts it into your Ocado trolley. You'll find how that works just below.

If you've tried a meal box, you'll know the drill. The box sends its own menu for the week and you choose from it. Here the two of you choose from what you both said yes to, and the food comes from your usual supermarket. There's more on that in your favourite meal box recipe isn't coming back.

How a week like this gets made

What's For Dinner?! (WFD) is a swipe-to-match dinner-decision and meal-planning app for couples, families and households: everyone swipes on meals, you match on one you both want, matches build your weekly plan, and the plan builds your shopping list. Available on iPhone and Android.

  1. Everyone swipes

Each person swipes on meals on their own phone, whenever suits them. Love it or skip it. Nobody sees what anyone else skipped.

  2. Two yeses make a match

When two people love the same meal, it's a match. The plan builds from whoever has swiped, so nobody's dinner waits on anyone else.

  3. Matches build the week

Matched meals build a seven-night plan. Swap a meal, move it to another night, lock the ones you're sure of or skip a night you won't be cooking.

  4. The plan builds the list

One shopping list for the whole week, and on iPhone the Personal Shopper puts it in your supermarket trolley.

Shopping the week at Ocado

  • The plan builds one shopping list for the week, with quantities merged into the pack sizes UK shops sell and sorted by supermarket aisle. Tap "Have it" for anything that's already in the cupboard.
  • Each ingredient is mapped by hand to a real product at the supermarket, so packs are counted, not guessed.
  • The Personal Shopper puts every line into your own trolley at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Ocado or Morrisons, on iPhone, in the UK, and reads the trolley back after each add to check it went in. This household shops at Ocado.
  • You sign in to the supermarket yourself, review the trolley, pick a slot and pay there. WFD never sees your supermarket password, never places an order and takes no payment.
  • In our own run on 25 October 2026, the Personal Shopper added 70 of 70 lines to an Ocado trolley in 3 minutes 12 seconds.
  • WFD is free to use, with no time limit: swiping, matching, the weekly plan and cook mode. Full Access adds the shopping list and the tools to change the week, £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year for up to six people, with a 3-day free trial.

The whole run, timed, is in the weekly food shop in under four minutes.

Questions, answered

What can working parents cook in 30 minutes?

Plenty. This week has chicken parmigiana, gammon and pea pasta, hot honey salmon, sesame chicken noodles, fajitas, meatball subs and falafel pittas, each 30 minutes or less by the recipe's own timings. In What's For Dinner?! (WFD) the two of you swipe on meals, matches build the week, and the plan builds the shopping list.

How do two busy parents decide what's for dinner without a WhatsApp thread?

Swipe instead of message. In What's For Dinner?! (WFD) you each swipe on meals on your own phone, love it or skip it, and when you both love the same meal it's a match. Matches build a seven-night plan, so the deciding happens once a week, not at twenty to six every night.

Does WFD still work if only one of us gets round to swiping?

Yes. What's For Dinner?! (WFD) builds the plan from whoever has swiped, and one person liking three meals is enough for a plan. Nobody's dinner waits on anyone else. When the other one does swipe, their matches go into the next plan.

How fast is WFD's Personal Shopper at Ocado?

In our own run on 25 October 2026, the Personal Shopper in What's For Dinner?! (WFD) added 70 of 70 lines to an Ocado trolley in 3 minutes 12 seconds. It runs on iPhone, opens Ocado's own website inside the app and reads the trolley back after each add. You sign in, check the trolley, pick a slot and pay with Ocado yourself.

How is WFD different from a meal box?

A meal box sends its own weekly menu and you choose from it. What's For Dinner?! (WFD) plans the week from meals you and your partner swiped yes to, builds one shopping list from that plan, and its Personal Shopper puts the list into your own trolley at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Ocado or Morrisons, on iPhone, in the UK.

How much does WFD cost for a couple?

What's For Dinner?! (WFD) is free to use, with no time limit: swiping, matching, the weekly plan and cook mode. Full Access adds the shopping list and the tools to change the week, £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year for up to six people, with a 3-day free trial. One subscription covers you both.
